What does Human Growth Hormone (HGH) do?

What is HGH?
Human growth hormone is a naturally occurring substance made by our pituitary glands. Also see our page on IGF-1, which is related. The first real HGH human growth hormone was taken from the pituitary glands of cadavers. That could have certain health risks. But now it is almost always produced by the same safe, recombinant growth method (essentially sort of "molecularly copying" in layman's terms) used to produce other therapeutic proteins like insulin. It is NOT from animal or human sources.

When you're a growing child, hgh involves your growth. But it appears to change roles after you grow up, affecting immune system functions, longevity and anti-aging.

Throughout our lives, our pituitary glands naturally make HGH. As the name implies, during childhood, HGH supports our continued growth. Then, even after we reach our full growth potential in adulthood, HGH continues to play an important role in keeping our metabolism efficient. However, as we get older and our bodies stop producing enough HGH, our metabolic rates decrease, leading to fatigue, weight gain, hypertension and the other ailments commonly associated with aging.

In A Physician's Guide to Natural Health Products that Work, Dr. James Howenstine writes, "These injections appear able to reverse 10 years of aging with one year of treatment." Furthermore, one 1987 study revealed that even young adults lose body fat and gain lean muscle mass from taking synthetic-HGH injections, according to Ronald Katz and Robert Goldman's book Stopping the Clock. These studies, combined with overwhelmingly popular media coverage, have created worldwide synthetic-HGH hype. But is it justified?

    Questions about Aging
    How do you measure aging?
Medical tests called Biomarkers actually indicate signs of aging at different levels down to DNA. At the functional level, we test such things as visual accommodation, auditory response, and memory succession. We do a skin biopsy at the cellular level. We test biochemicals such as hormones and cholesterol, and DNA is checked for damage to hereditary matter.

What is an average treatment regimen?
Specific treatment regimens are customized based on a person's specific goals. We start with counseling, diet, exercise, and nutritional supplements. More comprehensive testing and hormonal supplements may also be prescribed.

What is involved in hormone replacement therapy?
Hormones are chemical messengers that control bodily functions. Aging depletes the body's hormonal levels. We measure a patient's level of hormones and prescribe balanced hormone replacement to restore hormone levels to where they were in the patient's early 30s. In many cases, this can be done naturally with secretogogues, which release the hormones already made by the body.

    What are cognitive enhancers?
Techniques to improve your mental acumen. Some involve natural herbs like ginko. Meditation is also an effective enhancer.

    Mayo Clinic Report

Scientists know that growth hormone levels plummet 20 fold from young adult levels to age 65. The hormonal crash causes conditions very similar to those of metabolic syndrome -- increased belly fat, reduced bone and muscle mass and resistance to insulin, putting older people at risk for many diseases. For more than two decades, Mayo investigator, Johannes Veldhuis, M.D. , has chipped away at understanding the complex and cascading hormonal changes that accompany aging. This article attempts to explain the innovative biological mathematics and human research that he and his colleagues hope will aid the development of new therapies to counteract the pathological effects of aging.
